Good Practical Typography for Web Design

Typography effective in web design can be the significant impact to engage or turn away your visitors.

1. Readability

The aesthetics are useless if visitors can’t read the content. Choose a simple font is better. I would try to use no more than three families with clean and clear look at around 12-14px. The creative fonts should use for headlines or quotes. Also the background and font color should have high contrast.

2. Fonts

To convey your message on web design, choose a font that feels like it could work.
  • Serif – traditional and conservative look
Times
Century
Palatino
Garamond
  • Sans Serif – modern and uncluttered look
Arial
Tahoma
Lucida Sans
Franklin Gothic

3. Size

As mention earlier, the size between 12-14px looks good and easy to read but titles or headlines is harder to make decision. I usually try out different sizes until I get the one that big enough to grab attention as I need on the web page.

Heavy fonts usually convey strength, powerful and confident. For instance, headlines with capital and bold grab attention quickly and feel important. On the other hand, headlines with lighter fonts are not noticeable as much as the heavy one.

Web Design Company  vs. Web Design Company

4. Hierarchy

Normally when you want to emphasize the element on your web page, you would give it bigger than the others. But it is not the only way. Color, weight, placement, and size are all important to create hierarchy on web pages.

3 Tips to improve your Website Ranking on Google’s Search

1. Valuable content

First and foremost is creating valuable content for your website. If people find your content useful, they may link to their websites or share to friends. It can help your website gains more traffic.

These lists should be part of your content:
  • Informative
If you have office or store location; you should include hours of operation, location, and contact information to your web page particularly on the contact page.
  • High quality
Be your customers’ resource for what they need. The more you create content that helps your prospects, the better succeed you are. If you include keywords on your page, make it sounds natural to read through.
  • Engaging
Make your website appeals to your audiences with images; it can be your products, your team, or yourself.
  • More valuable and useful
If you write about “Logo design with illustrator”, make sure your article provides more value or a different perspective than the others on the web.
  • Content update
Regularly fresh content is one of the best influence for search rankings, so be sure to keep it fresh.

2. Content description on your site

  • Title tag
Each web page contains the head tag that appears at the top, which is the information description for your page. So unique and descriptive titles tell your audiences and search engine what your page is about. Long titles can be confusing and may not fully display in search results.
  • Meta descriptions
The meta description tells search engines what your site is about in search results. It is different from title tags that should be concise. You should write the meta description short and summarizes a page’s content, and can be filled with some keywords.
  • Images with “alt” attribute
It’s important to have “alt” attribute of images on your site for both search engines and users. It is meant to be an alternative for non-visual or impair internet users. So the “alt” tag should be concise, clear and easy to read.

3. Follow Google guidelines

Don't deceive your users or present different content to search engines than you display to users. Avoid tricks to improve search engine rankings such as hidden text, hidden links, create multiple pages or domains with duplicate content. Instead make your website stand out from others in your field.

Writing for the Web

Writing for the web needs to be different from writing for print. According to Jakob Nelsen's study, we tend to scan content on the web and search for the information we want, which is not the same way we read books or magazines. There are some rules help to improve writing content on your web pages.

The conclusion first

Place the most important part of web writing at the very top of your web page.
  • People can quickly scan and decide if they want to read the rest or not.
  • They don’t like to read all the way to the bottom of the screen.
  • If you place the most important points at the end, most of them may miss it.

Use clear and simple language

Your website is going to be viewed from people around the world with all levels of English knowledge. If you write to lower level audiences understand you have done well.

Limit one thought in each paragraph

It’s hard to read long especially on computer monitor. If you try to limit only one idea each paragraph, it will be easy to scan through and get general idea what the paragraph is about.

Use lists

Try to use list if you can because
  • Easier to scan
  • Users do not need to read every word but still understandable
  • Short and get to the point

Use descriptive link text

You want your audiences to interact with your pages, give them a definition for the link. Let them know what it will be on the end when they click link not just “click here.”

Be concise

Keep your pages short and concise. If your content is very long, better to have sub section and write as a stand-alone page.

Key Elements of an effective website

Anyone who knows HTML and CSS can create a website. But designing a great one in order to accomplish desired actions and appealing to visitors, needs to have some specific elements.

Don’t make visitors think

Your website should be cleared about who you are, what you do, and how you can help your visitors. If visitors can’t tell what your website is about within seconds, they won’t stick around long.

Good visual design

People like first impressions, your visitors will too. Choose wisely for typography, layout, colors, and graphics. It should be consistent on all web pages.

  • Choose colors that suit and meaningful to your business
  • Choose appropriate font face and font size throughout your website, and try not to have more than three different fonts
  • Choose high quality of image or graphics
  • White space is a good friend to help make important elements stand out and uncluttered.

Easy Navigation

Navigation bar are the links that take visitors where they need to get more information. It usually locates on the top or the left side of web pages. The basic essentials like “About us”, “Services”, and “Contact” page should be easy to find out about you.

Call to action

The call to action is a set of words that urge your website visitors to take an action on your website. In order to direct them to next step, make sure use actionable words like “Free Trial”, “Buy Now”, or “Start Free Now.”

Meaningful content

Who is your target audience? What are they looking for from your website? What products or services can you offer? Most people surfing the internet because they are looking for something they need or get helped.
  • Try to provide helpful, knowledgeable information in your content
  • Keep your pages short and get right to the point
  • Write for your visitors/readers not for search engine. SEO is important to get traffic to website. But if you write too obviously towards search engines you will quickly lose readers.

Load fast

Don’t have your visitors wait for a page to load more than a few seconds because they are more likely to go over to your competition!

5 Things Your Website is Missing

Chances are your business has a website. To increase visibility and reach more potential customers, make sure your website has these following key elements.

1. Contact information

It is general practice to include a page designated for your contact information. Company’s address, e-mail, map, and phone number should be easy to find on this page.

2. Call to action

A call to action or CTA is a banner or button helps users what to do next. They can be used for downloading a file, get contact information, request quote, or buy now. With effective call to action, you can urge users take action on your website.

3. Social media links

Social media provides the easy way to communicate with your customers and potentials. It becomes a way that people give recommendation to their friends and shares your content with people they connect to. When you add social media links to your site, it will help increase your like and followers.

4. Testimonials

After reading experiences with your products or services, potential customers will be more likely to move forward with your brand. The key to add testimonial is quality not quantity. If a customer gives too long testimonial, quote the parts that sound best.

5. SEO

A properly optimized site can expect increased traffic to your site. Write content that is relevant to your site or topic, and include keyword in the title. Get more info about Search Engine Optimization.

Login Design for Trans Maldivian Airways

Trans Maldivian Airways is a private airline based in Ibrahim Nasir International Airport. It operates floatplanes to resort islands in the Maldives. They have recently started using SMS Pro’s web-based aviation safety software. We would like to give them a new look to their login page to generate good will and because we like working with the crew over in the Maldives.

Screen shot of existing log in page.

First Design

First I grabbed a few images from their website and stored them on my computer. Their nice images made my work easier. After picked out the image for first design, I started to work with my favorite tool--Photoshop. I had the image blurred because I wanted the login form dominant, and then placed it below our logo. For the login form, I had white transparent background and changed the tone to be TMA’s logo color and placed it on top of the main image, then relocated all content as usual.

Screen shot of first design.

Second design

The second design, I did the opposite way with the first design. This one I used the original image without blurring it. However I cropped its size to fit my page. I had the login form and TMA’s logo located on the left side. I expanded username and password fields wide enough to make them jumped out of the stunning image background. Then use same tone of TMA’s blue color for login button. I left all content as it was in the first design. Lastly, I repositioned our logo and welcome message.

Screen shot of second design.

Each design had its own unique way to accomplish. I worked around the image since it was the center of attention. We will have TMA make decision on the login page new look.

Design Login Page for West Air Sweden

West Air Sweden is a cargo airline based in Gothenburg, Sweden. It operates scheduled and ad hoc freight charter services for FedEx, DHL, TNT and UPS. West Air has been using SMS Pro's Web-based aviation safety software since the end of 2013.

Screen shot of existing login page.

First Design

What I would like to change was login form style and color. First I added the grey background to style the form. I also wanted to add color and an element to emphasize it a little more. Then I thought if I have an icon it should work too. So I created the key symbol with illustrator and placed it next to the form title; it helped to gain more attraction. Next, I started to work on the font and size by having larger size for the elements I wanted to emphasize and rearranged their locations. Then added color to it, looked pretty good!

I decided to use the large picture to be background for both login form and content. Then I had login form on the right side of the page. For the content, I changed the font color to be white on the black-transparent background.

Screen shot of first design login page.

A second design

This design I changed the look of login form by having transparent background and font color to be white instead. Then I moved it to the center of the page. I still using the same image but framed its height shorter also added a black transparent layer on top of it. Next relocation the whole content below the image and adjust welcome message size.

Design Login Page for Seneca Safety

SMS Pro is web-based aviation safety software for airlines, airports, flight schools and aviation maintenance organizations. This enterprise-level aviation SMS software was developed by the Anchorage Alaska Web design and programming company - NorthWest Data Solutions for the aviation industry in 2007.

One of our clients has been using this login page for a long time. Occasionally, this client would add a picture to this page, but lately, this login page looks and feels empty. I’d like to add some interesting elements to it.

Screen shot of existing login page.

First Design

We have a lot of images about airplanes, helicopters, pilots, airports, and more that related to aviation. But the difficult part is choosing the right image for its purpose. I chose these images from our client’s website Seneca College. But the problem was all images are small, so I decided to use 3 images instead of one to create this login page. I used red and black to be main color design since it matched with their website and our logo. I had grey color to make the contrast in area I wanted to emphasize in the form.

Screen shot of first design login page.

A second design

Instead of using 3 images, I chose only one. But like I mentioned earlier, the image was small size so I had to help cover the pixel looking after enlarge it. I put the Gaussian blur and another transparent layer with Photoshop on top of the image. It became a good background then I had login form locate at the middle of the page. I changed the color on the form area to make it stand out.

Screen shot of second design login page.

I like this design better but again I’m not the decision maker. So which one do you like better?

Difference Between Static and Dynamic Web Sites

You may come across these terms when you’re serving the internet or by your web designer. It’s good to know the difference so you can choose the best solution for your website.

Static websites

A static website is created by tools like HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Each web page is a separate document, that means the way to edit this kind of website is go into each page with knowledge of the code (HTML, CSS, JavaScript.) You would have to use a web page editor such as text editor or Dreamweaver, or pay web designer to update your website.

Dynamic websites

A dynamic website is created using more complex code like PHP or ASP with database driven. You would have a blog, search option, contact form and more. Many dynamic websites can be controlled by a content management system (CMS.) You can change the content through an admin panel which changes the source code in real time, no need to know HTML or other languages.

Many people prefer dynamic websites because they have a lot of benefits.

  • Dynamic sites easy to update
  • That helps to get better on search engine like google since you will always have fresh content on your website and google likes it
  • Rich of feature
  • You can enable and add new features easily in the future
  • It’s impossible to destroy the page layout
  • You always update content and images from admin panel when the source code store in separate files

Why does my Business Need a Website?

Should your business have a website even if your business is small? The size does not matter on the internet world. You may be a one-man show business owner or a big corporate company, if you don’t have a website; you’re losing business opportunity to others that they do.

why business needs a website image

Reason No. 1 – Interactive brochure

By having a website you can save ton of money to create and distribute brochures. A website is an interactive brochure that your clients and potentials can browse 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It is much easier to update your website than having your print shop to update brochures. Modern websites are created on Content Management Systems such as DotNetNuke, WordPress or Drupal that you can update or upload content and images quickly.

Reason No.2 – More opportunity

More than 2.7 billion people use the internet every day. And more than 80% of those have purchased something with reasons like avoid trips to the store, shopping without salesperson pressure, and easier to compare prices.

Reason No.3 – Customer service

You can have customer service right on your website by having an FAQ page. The potentials and clients can learn and get company information they want easily. Also FAQs are great place to answer any sales objections. Use a question and answer to explain why you offer more value products or services than your competitor’s.

Reason No.4 – Communication

Having a blog or even just have content on your home page to update your new products, promotions, events or anything you would want to inform your potential and clients.

the reason to have a website - image

These are main reasons for you to have a website. But you should be aware of having a professional-looking one with well design of the ease of navigation, call to action, and all functions work as it supposed to be. Here's why?

Login page Web Design for airCreebec

Screenshot of existing design

One of requirements for airCreebec is I have to keep the content they have now on the existing login page. This is quite challenging task since I can’t use the large image, and I need to re-design all text to look more inviting to read.

First design

First of all, I’d like to break the whole line of text across the web page because it seemed too long to read. Then I grouped them up on one side of the page and had the rest on another side. I also concerned about the amount of characters on both sides so it looked balance that way. For the url address, I put it as a hyperlink under the word “clicking.”

Screenshot of first design

I replaced part of the logo with the image of their plane because I wanted the image stand out but still keeping the word “airCreebec.” I adjusted login form by increasing the font, adding some color, and repositioning a little. Added two lines to separate all text content from image and login form.

Second design

Screenshot of second design

After finishing the first design, I looked away from my computer screen and let my eyes fresh. I told myself I could make a little more change to get a better result.

I took away the USER LOGIN background then change color from white to dark grey. I reduced the width of login form but increased the height, and added the skinny box to the left side of USER LOGIN word. That helped its look more modern. Finally, I also increased the height of the image to match with the height of login form. I like it!

We will have the client look and make decision for their new login page. I’m already exciting to implement code for them.

USING WEB SAFE FONT IN YOUR WEB DESIGN

What are web safe fonts?

Almost every computer has a set of fonts loaded that are available to everyone, not just your web designers and developers. These fonts are often loaded by the computer vendor or are the default sets of fonts for the operating system the PC had installed at the factory. Furthermore, most users can install additional fonts either one set at a time or in groups, but website designers shouldn't be using these fonts without some guidance.

By any means, not all font sets for web traffic are available to all users. Yes, it's hard to believe. Not all computers have the same sets of fonts installed. Furthermore, many computer users never know the difference, but you website designers had better! Whenever your web designers are designing web sites, they must keep this in mind. Professional Alaska website designers and developers are aware of this, and so should you. When your web designers decide to use a font on your web pages that visitors don't own, that selected font will render in a different manner on the visitors' PC.

Then, how does your firm ensure your web fonts will look great on the majority of PCs and Macs on the market? Web safe fonts are a set of highly common fonts that come installed on just about all personal computers. Anchorage, Alaska Website design is able to offer your company special helps if needed.

Who needs to be aware of web safe fonts in today's world?

Every web designer is encouraged to use web safe fonts. Your corporation is recommended to make sure that your site fonts are always easily read by your corporation's home users. Whenever making use of web safe fonts, your corporation's web developer can assume that the vast majority of users will share the same web experience.

If your potential’ customers can't quickly enjoy your company's web pages, then are unable to get the content your web designers and developers wrote. When the site content on your business's web pages is beastly and potential customers resolve to endure the unpleasant experience and go through the sites for your content. It will still appear unprofessional and provide your potential customers with a poor impression about your organization's commitment to quality.

Where are web safe fonts applicable?

With your web pages' site content plan on incorporating web safe fonts in plain text headers, links, and all textual content. Whenever your web designer uses plain text for your company's logo, they are recommended to use web safe fonts for the logo text. Actually, about the only exception to incorporating web safe fonts is whenever adopting text in images. If your web designer determines to adopt images for part of your text, accordingly one can freely use any desired font because images always appear the same on all PCs and Macs. In any case, your business's designers should never adopt images for all of your text. Be careful when using images. SEO will be adversely affected.

How do we know which fonts are safe, and how are they used?

Place web safe fonts into your CSS file with font-family rules. For instance:

font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;

Arial is the most common font on boxes. Sometimes PCs and Macs may not have Arial installed; usually this happens on older Apple computers. Nevertheless, Helvetica is popularly installed on Apple computers. Helvetica looks almost exactly like to Arial. Thus Helvetica is commonly placed as the next choice after Arial. If browsers are unable to find the first font in the list, they look for the next font. In this case, Helvetica font will be shown if Arial is not installed.

Good Website Designers Effectively Use Meta Tags

Effectively Use meta tags

SEO ordinarily refers to making imperceptible adjustments to parts of your web site either by your web designers or by the person responsible for content management. If inspected by themselves, these adjustments probably appear like incremental adjustments. In any case, if merged with other website modifications or "optimizations", they could generate a noticeable influence on your visitors' experience and also the evaluation in organic search results.

Possibly the topics outlined here are already familiar to your company's web designers and developers. Because they consist of essential factors for any business web page, but in any case, your developers may not be taking full advantage of their potential. Beyond a doubt, every Anchorage, Alaska website design company is aware of these basic elements, but they don't always practice them. Make sure your web designers are doing their job properly with this little bit of knowledge.

Create Unique, Depictive Web Page Titles

Title tags notify both your company web sites' potential customers and search engines what is the subject matter of a particular page. "Title" tags are in most cases to be placed inside of the "head" tag of HTML documents. Your organization's software engineers should write a unique title for each web page.

Best Practices for Web Page Title Tags

Specifically specify the content by grabbing a title that properly communicates the topic of the web page's subject matter.

Avoid:
  • Selecting titles with no relation to web page's textual content
  • Adopting default titles like "Untitled" or "New Page"
Do:
  • Generate individual title tags for every page by supplying each of your business's pages a unique title tag, which helps search engines know how the page is distinct from other web pages on your site, such as Alaska Web page design
Do not:
  • Using a single title tag across all of your web pages
  • Write short but descriptive titles by ensuring your website's titles are both concise and illuminating. If titles are too wordy, major search engines merely place a small part in the search engine results
  • Leaving exceptionally lengthy titles that are of no use to your company's visiting clients
  • Stuffing worthless valuable keywords into your web pages' title tags

Taking Advantage of the "description" Meta Tag

Web pages' description meta tag provides major search engines a summary of what the web page is about. In as much as web pages' title may be merely a few words or a short phrase. Web pages' description meta tag may be a sentence or two or a short paragraph. Similar to "title" tags, description meta tags are set within the "head" tag of HTML documents.

Description meta tag is essential because Google, Yahoo and Bing might place them as snippets for your business's web pages. Snippets materialize under pages' title and above pages' URL in major search engine results.

Words and phrases within snippets are bolded whenever they show up in users' queries. This offers your website' potential customers clues whether the web page's copy is relevant to what he is hunting.

Best Practices for Description Meta Tags

Meticulously summarize web pages' textual content by choosing descriptions that both brief and interest users. If they glimpse your organization's description meta tag as a snippet in major search engines results.

Do:
  • Write unique depictions for every web page by creating different description meta tags for each web page. This helps major search engines and your web sites' visitors, particularly in queries where users retrieve many pages on your domain. If your enterprise's web site has 800 or 5000 pages, hand-crafting description meta tags isn't a logical choice. In this case, your company could automatically write description meta tags based on each page's web content.
Do not:
  • Writing description meta tags that don't relate to web page
  • Using generic explanations like "This is a webpage" or "Page about aviation risk management system"
  • Filling descriptions with only keywords
  • Copy/pasting entire contents of documents into description meta tags
  • Using single description meta tags across all your web pages or a large set of pages.
In conclusion, these meta tags are understood by many people, but yet most fail to use them correctly.

Web Design Tips for Login page

One of our products, SMS Pro™, is web-based aviation safety software. SMS Pro has a configurable login form that allows users to securely access the system. We recognize the importance of functionality, usability as well as aesthetic desirability. As a website designer, I have to balance all of them together in order to meet a great user’s experience.

Images are helpful during the design process, but they need to used properly. What does that mean? It means that when we have an image, such as from your camera, we can’t haphazardly upload it next to text on our login form. We have to think and choose wisely.

The following are steps a professional Web designer takes to modify an existing SMS Pro site.

Existing Web Site Design

What would I like to change?

1. The image looks nice but it needs some work before using it. I’d like to remove the person who stands right in front of the plane. This task would take about 20-30 minutes with Photoshop so why not? The image without the person there makes it less distracted. Next, I would not use a border surrounding the image because if it doesn’t help to make it looks better I’d rather just leave it alone. One of my principles of design – less is more.

2. A couple more things I would like to do are adjusting the color tone and crop the image. So this way I have the plane in focus more than clouds. Then put the image on top of the page.

3. The logo and login form do not stand out and they don't seem connected. I’d like to group them together to make them stand out more. I'd put them on the grey background (same tone with the sky.) Also change character of word “username” and “password” with uppercase and increase the size. Change text color to be dark grey since it match with the login background color.

4. Increase the size of text box including the login button.

5. Change the word “Retrieve password” to be “Forgot your password?” and move it next to login button.

6. Move the Facebook button away from the middle of the screen.

7. Add welcome text under the logo to inform users this is their safety system, and it helps to direct users’ eyes to the login form.

How about a second Web design idea for the Login page?

I like the first design better than the existing login form but I like this one even more.

1. I change image since the previous plane faces outward so it leads users’ eyes out from the page. With this image, it helps keep users engaged within the page.

2. The background color changed to be the same tone with plane background (faded more.)

3. The logo looks bigger since it has more white space.

4. The welcome text has more room for larger size and becomes the title of the page.

One of our cultures is excellent customer support. I’m happy that I can help improve SMS Pro™ to serve our clients better. In conclusion, exceptional Web design is about whether the client likes the concept. So, which one do you like better?

You Know You Need a Web Designer When…

Your online representative

Would you fix your car by yourself? Most of us would say no. We would hire a professional to insure that we get the best results possible. A professional designer knows how to create appealing website to attract your target audience. First impressions are very important, and if your website represents your company in a professional manner you will gain customers that would otherwise be lost.

Uniqueness

There are millions of websites on the Internet. (Source: How Many Websites Are There In The World?) How are you going to make your website stand out? Purchasing a template may seem like a good idea for creating your own website, but you risk having your website look like others. Also you may need specific features that a template cannot provide you such as a photo gallery or forums.

Design sense

A skilled designer knows how to create quality graphic elements like image resolutions, correct image file type, and other graphic design technique. Designer responsibilities also include the use of right fonts to fit your brand, how to use white space, what colors are most effectively combined, and how to arrange all elements in aesthetical way.

Time

Hiring a professional web designer instead of building a website yourself will save you a lot of valuable time. There is a wide range of skills that are necessary to make effective websites not just learning the basics HTML. Important languages to help creating websites cover CSS, JavaScript, and others.

Search Engine Optimization

It is useless to have a great website if it does not show up on search engine results. A high search engine ranking is important because potential customers will find you on the Internet. A professional web designer knows how to optimize your content, all tags and using effective keywords on your pages.

Browser Compatibility

Different browsers (Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Mozilla, Safari, etc.) have different standards for displaying web pages. What looks perfectly fine in Google Chrome may show up as a mess in Internet Explorer. Professional web designers are skilled at knowing how to make websites display properly on multiple browsers. An efficient web designer will test your website across browsers, insuring that the majority of people on different browsers can view your website the way it should be displayed.
